Discovering the Prepared Soil of the Heart
Do you sometimes feel like you are trying to plant seeds in concrete? You share truth, but it produces no harvest. Frustrating…. isn’t it?
Jesus gave us a powerful story to describe this experience in His first parable found in Mark’s Gospel, Chapter 4. In vs. 13 He says to His disciples, “If you do not understand this parable, how will you understand any of the other parables?”
We know that planting seeds in prepared soil is much more productive, but how do you discover the prepared soil in the lives of others? You listen. Proverbs 20:5 ‘The purpose in a man’s mind is like deep waters, but a man of understanding draws it out.’
I like the statement by master coach Tony Stoltzfus, ‘If you listen deeply enough, they will take you to their heart.’
Instead of giving counsel, listen to the heart. Follow the interests – thoughts – feelings of the one speaking. Ask questions or just say, ‘Tell me more about that.’ Be fully present. Listen with your eyes.
If you listen deeply enough, they will take you to their heart.
